| DRIVING WITH A
DISABILITY Driver Rehabilitation and Fleet Safety Services offers comprehensive
driving assessments for clients with a variety of medical conditions including traumatic
injuries, neurological conditions, degenerative conditions and congenital disabilities. We
provide assessments and rehabilitation programs for learner drivers and drivers with previous
driving experience.
Driving Assessment
The driving assessment comprises two parts; the off-road assessment and the on-road
assessment.
Off-Road Assessment
The off-road assessment establishes the client's physical, cognitive and visual status
according to the national medical guidelines published by Austroads Incorporated. The need for
vehicle modifications or equipment is discussed during the off-road assessment. The assessment
is conducted by a driver trained Occupational Therapist. A vision assessment with an
Orthoptist may be arranged if required.
On-Road Assessment
The on-road assessment determines the client's ability to drive safely. The client's ability
to learn to drive with modifications, equipment or using particular driving techniques is also
determined. The on-road assessment is conducted by a driver trained Occupational Therapist and
a Driving Instructor using the Driver Rehab vehicle. Vehicle modifications for most
disabilities are available to be trialed on the day of the assessment. An Orthoptist may also
be present in the vehicle if required. At the conclusion of the on-road assessment a
rehabilitation program may be recommended if required. Assessments for buses, trucks,
forklifts and motorbikes are also available.
Rehabilitation Program
At the completion of the driving assessment, some client's require a rehabilitation program
designed to assist them to commence or resume driving safely, legally and comfortably. This
may include:
- Learning to drive with vehicle modifications or equipment
- Learning to apply specilaised driving techniques
- Improving driver confidence or reduction in anxiety in a variety of traffic situations
- Preparing to undergo an NSW RTA Disability Test
The Driver Rehab vehicle is modified with a large variety of modifications and equipment to
meet clients' needs. The vehicle is also fitted with a dual brake for use by the Driving
Instructor if required. We also have access to heavy vehicles for assessments and training.
