EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS AND DRIVING INSTRUCTORS
Driver Rehabilitation and Fleet Safety Services offers courses for Occupational Therapists to
gain the skills required to be a qualified and registered driving assessor. We also offer a
variety of courses for Occupational Therapists and Driving Instructors who are already working
in the field of driving, to enhance their skills in rehabilitation.Occupational
Therapy Driver Assessment and Training Course
This course is for Occupational Therapists who wish to gain the knowledge and skills
required to be a driver assessor. It is a 2-week full-time course offering theoretical and
practical components. At the completion of the course, participants will have gained the
skills to:
- assess clients' driving competence
- identify skill deficits in the driving task
- document findings of the driving assessment
- prescribe appropriate vehicle modifications and equipment
- design driving remediation programs.
Participants also have the opportunity to work with Driver Rehab clients. The course can be
completed as a post-graduate subject or as a continuing professional education course.

Heavy Vehicle Assessment Course
This course is for driver trained Occupational Therapists who wish to develop their skills
for heavy vehicle assessments. The 2-day course includes theoretical and practical components,
where participants have the opportunity to drive a number of different heavy vehicles. At the
completion of the course, participants will have:
- the skills to assess the driving competence of heavy vehicle drivers
- the skills to identify deficits in the heavy vehicle driving task
- knowledge of a variety of heavy vehicles and their components
- an understanding of the tasks associated with operating a heavy vehicle

Driving Instructors' Course
This 2-day course is for qualified Driving Instructors who have not previously worked in
driver rehabilitation and/or wish to develop their skills in driver rehabilitation. The aim of
the course is to train Driving Instructors in aspects of disability and injuries as they
affect driving. At the completion of the course, participants will have gained the skills to:
- Work as a driver rehabilitation team member
- Provide driver training to people with physical, cognitive and visual deficits
- Provide driver training to the elderly
- Provide driver training using vehicle modifications and equipment
