VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS AND EQUIPMENT

As a result of a medical condition, some people have difficulty operating vehicle controls or driving comfortably in a standard vehicle. This may be because of a loss of a limb, pain, a neurological condition or a congenital condition such as cerebral palsy. This may result in a person avoiding driving, relying on others for transportation or taking public transport. In such circumstances, modifications to the vehicle or specialised driving equipment can assist a person to drive independently.

It is important to ensure that the modifications are prescribed by a driver trained Occupational Therapist and, where relevant, installed by an engineer registered with the state licensing authority. In some circumstances, driving with modifications or equipment that are incorrectly prescribed or installed may be dangerous and illegal.

Driving with vehicle modifications or equipment usually requires the client to participate in a driving assessment with a driver trained Occupational Therapist. The Occupational Therapist can prescribe the most appropriate modifications or equipment in consultation with the client, the Driving Instructor, vehicle modifier and any other relevant parties. Often, the client will need to have a series of driving lessons to learn to drive safely with the modifications or equipment in a variety of traffic situations.

Driver Rehabilitation and Fleet Safety Services prescribe and supply a variety of equipment and modifications. We can also refer clients to manufacturers and stockists of modifications and equipment, or Engineers registered with the relevant licensing authority.
